The breakwater entrance to
the western end of San Pedro Bay is Angel's Gate marked by the Los
Angeles Lighthouse (33°42.5'N - 118°15.0''W). This is within
sight of San Pedro Hill which forms the western boundary of the bay,
about 3.3 miles northwest of Point Fermin which is at 100' above sea
level and marked by a light at 120'. Cabrillo is the
first area to the west, then an short basin with the San Pedro Boat
Works to the west, then the Main Channel leading to the West Basin, the
Turning Basin, the East Basin Channel and Cerritos Channel.
Because this is a large, heavily trafficked working port, it is best to
get out your charts and study them for a while before you depart.
Distances within the breakwater are deceiving, especially under sail and
at night against the backdrop of a million white and yellow lights and
frequent huge ships seemingly meandering around.
