Juan used to "summer"
his boat in Channel Islands Harbor for many years and still talks about
it! The great beer can races and constant winds, the variety of activities
(the many restaurants and pubs with sail-in parking) and the proximity
to the Channel Islands. It wasn't summer without a week or two out
cruising. Known as the Gateway to the Channel Islands; 11 miles to Anacapa, 18 to Santa Cruz Island and cruising distance to Santa Rosa, San
Miguel and Santa Barbara Islands, Channel Islands Harbor is home to over
2,600 boats. Commissioned in May of 1965 and owned by the County
of Ventura, the harbor now is host to 4 yacht clubs and 9 marinas and year-round
events, both on and off the water.
The first phase of the renovation project of Channel Islands Harbor in
Oxnard, which began in 2007, will be completed in July, 2008. Marine
Emporium Landing invested more than $10 million in improvements to
visitor serving retail center and the 34-year-old wood docks and brought
them up to current safety standards. The new docks, including the ones
at Marine Emporium Landing, now include power, water, and access to fire
safety equipment. More improvements are in the works....
