Landmarks: Radio Beacon on Blackjack Peak between town and
Long Point, Carillon (white tower on western hill above town
.2 mile sw of Casino Point), the town buildings and lights at
night, the rock quarry 1 1/2 miles east of the harbor, the
Casino on Casino Point at land's end of breakwater, the
Hamilton Cove complex west of harbor by about one half a mile
and the Wrigley Mansion on eastern hill above town, as well as
both the Southeast and Southwest breakwaters.
Avalon has blossomed on
the north shore of Santa Catalina, 2 1/2 miles from the southeast end of the
island and the harbor entrance is between the Casino Point (FL Red 4 seconds)
breakwater on the North and the breakwater from Cabrillo Peninsula (FL White 2.5
seconds) and the transportation dock on the South. Both breakwaters are
marked by lights on the seaward ends. A pier divides the harbor and houses the
Harbor Patrol and various small businesses.
Harbor depths are between 2 fathoms along
the seawall on the first row of moorings to 13 fathoms at the transportation
wharf, dropping to 20 fathoms directly off the ocean side of the breakwaters.
The area from Abalone Point to Pebbly Beach
Amphibian Air Terminal Ramp is restricted for obvious reasons. Don't anchor
or dive within 200 feet of shore in this area. |
